During this most recent holiday, I had the opportunity to spend time with members of my family that I hadn’t seen in some years. I even met a new family member, Oliver! (pictured above). While the oven hummed with various starchy delights, we stepped outside to capture some family portraits. Here are a few notes for how I approached documenting this family gathering.
Starting With Connection
Before I even pick up the camera, I spent time hanging out and talking about the photos that we could make together. I want them to feel comfortable and seen, and that they are collaborating with me. When people relax, their interactions become natural and that’s where the magic happens. I encourage hugs, laughter, and little gestures that show love.
Using Warm, Natural Light
Lighting sets the tone. I looked for dappled afternoon light to capture the warmth of a family gathering. This light wraps around subjects gently, creating a sense of intimacy.
Noticing the In-between Moments
Everyone know what social scripts to follow when having a portrait taken, this is especially true when taking family pictures. Everyone look this way, smile and seem relaxed but get it perfect…this photo above was taken during a moment of pause. Oliver was getting a little board with taking photos, and was ready to jump around in the leaves again. This ended up being my favorite photo of the bunch, not the textbook family group photo, but a moment of introspection.
Keeping the Mood Light and Playful
I avoid rigid instructions. Instead, I suggest activities, like sharing what they’re thankful for or singing a song together, that spark real emotion. These moments lead to genuine laughter and expressions.
Edit for Warmth and Cohesion
Post-processing is where I enhance the feeling. I use warm tones, soft contrast, and subtle vignettes to draw attention to the subjects. My goal is to make the photo feel like a memory you can step back into.
Warm and intimate family photography isn’t about perfection, it’s about emotion. When families feel connected and comfortable, the photos naturally radiate love and gratitude.
